Each year, The Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, along with hundreds of volunteers, conducts the Point in Time count of homeless persons in DC. Several Christ House year-long volunteers, staff, and friends volunteered in January for this year’s count. The 2015 Point in Time fact sheet is now available here.
A few findings from this year’s count:
- 7,298: total number of persons experiencing homelessness:
- 544: persons who were unsheltered
- 5,085: persons in emergency shelters
- 1,669: persons in transitional housing
- One in five homeless adults surveyed have histories of substance abuse or mental illness; nine percent reported living with both conditions
- Eight percent of adult homeless persons reported a chronic health problem, and 13 percent reported a physical disability
- 15 percent of homeless adults reported histories of domestic violence
- 10 percent of homeless adults reported having served in the United States Armed Forces
