When Tony arrived to Christ House, our staff knew he was a resilient soul. A 61-year-old native Washingtonian, Tony attended H.D. Woodson High School before veering off course at the age of 16. Despite dropping out of school, Tony carved a path for himself through maintenance jobs and eventually found pride in his role as a security guard at hotels and the public library. However, Tony was enamored by the streets and began staying out late and struggling with substance use and transient employment.
For over two decades, Tony battled to reclaim his footing. He eventually found work at a car wash, where his boss affectionately gave him the nickname “Macaroni Tony”. Yet, life on the street had taken its toll and Tony was facing dangerously low heart rates and health challenges. He spent three months in two different hospitals and had to have a pacemaker inserted. Knowing that he needed a safe space to recuperate and learn how to monitor his heart rate, a loving cousin was able to connect Tony to Christ House, where he has found a sanctuary of healing and restoration.
Within the walls of Christ House, Tony has encountered not only comprehensive medical care, but also a community of support that has redefined his trajectory. Under the care of Christ House staff, Tony embarked on his journey of physical recuperation and recovery from his substance use disorder. Tony has found solace in shared experiences and a sense of belonging. Through Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and our transformative in-house New Day recovery program, Tony has formed meaningful relationships and is maintaining his sobriety.
With the news of an available studio apartment after years of waiting, Tony has embraced the prospect of independence and stability. His new apartment is just minutes away from Christ House, which will allow Tony to continue to attend 12-step recovery programs; a commitment Tony takes seriously. Tony is hopeful for what is to come and dreams of opening his own car washing and detailing business one day with the motto, “Macaroni Tony, the One and Only. If you don’t shine, we don’t shine!”
As we share Tony’s story, we are reminded of the profound impact that comprehensive and compassionate care can have on the lives of Christ House patients. Thank you for continuing to champion our mission—your support allows our patients to shine.
