Melissa, pictured above, volunteers her time as a Registered Nurse through the year-long volunteer program at Christ House. She reflects on her time in the program:
I initially really liked the idea of longer-term care for patients that would allow me to get to know the patients. The holistic care that we provide as nurses is extremely meaningful and effective for the vulnerable population that we serve. The nursing staff provide a wonderfully supportive environment for the nurses as well as the patients. Christ House was a wonderful setting to start off my nursing career, I was able to learn about a wide variety of diagnoses as well as how to provide relevant care for a population that is in such need of good health care.
Nurses are critical to the work of Christ House. The nursing staff administers medicine, provides wound care, oversees lab work, provides vaccinations, communicates with medical specialists, and provides patient education. They regularly educate patients about their medications and managing chronic illnesses, as well as offer health promotion classes on a variety of topics once a week. Our patients have a wide variety of diagnoses including cancers, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and complicated histories of addiction and trauma, so nurses are exposed to a wide spectrum of medical needs.
The individuals Christ House serves would otherwise fall through the cracks of the system—they are too sick to heal in a shelter or on the streets, but not sick enough to stay in a hospital. We provide 24/7 care for up to 34 men at a time. Read more about the work of Christ House.
Each year, we invite year-long volunteers to work and live in the Christ House community. They learn about issues of poverty, homelessness, mass incarceration, and other injustices both on the job and in community.
Are you or someone you know a nurse with a passion to help those in great need? We don’t want you to miss this wonderful opportunity. We are accepting applications from nurses at any stage in their career to join as a year-long volunteer. Applications are due by April 7th, click here for more information and to apply.
