Volunteer Spotlight: Virginia

April 6, 2016

Virginia

Virginia, kitchen and phone volunteer

Where do you call home?
Washington, DC. I was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama.

What attracted you to Christ House?
It seemed like a unique place and mission when I first heard of it years ago. It is well-run. To me, it’s a beacon of hope in the neighborhood.

What do you enjoy about volunteering at Christ House?
The camaraderie with the patients, staff, volunteers and residents. The enthusiasm for the work shown by all who participate. Listening and sharing stories of our varied backgrounds.

What is something you have learned while volunteering at Christ House?
The parts are always moving, so don’t wait for it to stop, just jump right in and help.

What is your favorite food?
I love most foods. Stir fry. Different kinds of cheeses, salads made with greens besides lettuce. Mexican tacos, Spanish tortillas. Pot roast. Due to a dietary restriction, I cannot be as spontaneous as I used to be.

What do you like to do for fun?
Learn new things, meet up with friends in the neighborhood, garden, sell things on Craigslist.

What do you enjoy doing in Washington?
Walking a lot, learning different neighborhoods, visiting friends, going to museums and rallies occasionally.

What is one thing in the world you would change if you could?
Increase the communitarian spirit in everyone. Decrease carbon and methane in the atmosphere.
