Reflection by Cesar Parada, student at Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School and intern at Christ House
Reflecting on my time at Christ House, I can truly say it has been an incredible and transformative experience. Throughout my time here, I’ve had the privilege of taking on a wide range of responsibilities. From logging in-kind donations and organizing Safeway runs to helping with the daily lunch service, decorating the bulletin board, and assisting Ms. Kathryn with the activity board—including an unforgettable trip to the zoo—every day brought something new.
These diverse tasks did more than just keep me busy; they taught me invaluable professional and life skills. My time at Christ House has significantly sharpened my communication, teamwork, time management, organization, and adaptability.
Working closely with the kitchen staff was a central part of my day and provided the ultimate environment for growth. Initially, stepping into the kitchen was a challenge. It was an entirely new experience for me, and I faced a steep learning curve as I figured out the best and most efficient ways to get things done.
However, by focusing on clear communication—asking questions, clarifying tasks, and discussing how to prepare certain meals—I quickly found my footing. What started as a challenge soon became second nature. This experience forced me out of my comfort zone, helped me find my voice, and taught me how to collaborate seamlessly within a fast-paced team.
I always strived to look for ways to go above and beyond during my service. One of the most rewarding moments was managing the influx of in-kind donations, particularly during the busy Christmas season. By taking charge of that organization, I felt as though I was able to take up a part of the workload for the rest of the staff, bringing up the donations to the third floor after every log.
Ultimately, my time at Christ House has been a crucial stepping stone toward my long-term aspirations. My future goal is to attend the United States Naval Academy and serve as an officer. Becoming a military leader requires strong foundations in leadership, communication, social awareness, and decisive decision-making.
At Christ House, I was faced with real-world situations every day that demanded those exact qualities. I am incredibly grateful for this chapter, as the skills I’ve forged here will undoubtedly serve me well as I prepare to lead and serve in the future.
