Remembering Rev. Allen Goetcheus

September 28, 2026

Remembering Rev. Allen A. Goetcheus
(April 5, 1941 – September 24, 2026)

Rev. Allen Goetcheus, pastor, servant-leader, and visionary, passed from this life on Thursday, September 24, 2026. Born April 5, 1941, in Muncie, Indiana, he leaves behind a legacy of compassionate ministry, radical hospitality, and faithful service to others.

Allen is survived by his children, John Allen Goetcheus (Johanna), Mark Wesley Goetcheus (Elisabeth), and Ann Janelle Goetcheus Gehl (Dan), and grandchildren, Grace (Peter), Davis, Hayes, Liza, Jax, Seeger, Victoria and Genevieve  who were a source of great joy and pride to him. Allen was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dr. Janelle Goetcheus, who died in October 2024.

From an early age, Allen felt a calling to ministry and eventually became an ordained elder in the Indiana Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. Before his ministry in Washington, D.C., Allen had a career in education and the arts. A graduate of Taylor University and Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, he taught at Taylor University and served as head of its Department of Speech and Drama. His love of theater and storytelling remained with him throughout his life, shaping his appreciation for the power of story, character, humor, and the human connections formed when people gather together.

Allen and Janelle’s lives of service brought them to Washington, D.C. in 1976. Originally preparing to serve as missionaries in Pakistan, they visited the Church of the Saviour while awaiting their visas. Their encounter with the people and ministries of Washington, D.C.’s poor communities changed the course of their lives. They felt called to remain in the District and began a decades-long ministry of healing and hospitality.

Together with members of the Church of the Saviour community, Allen and Janelle helped envision and create Christ House. When Christ House opened its doors on Christmas Eve 1985, Allen became its first president, a role he held for 30 years. In 2016, he stepped away from administrative leadership so that he could devote himself more fully to the pastoral ministry that had always been at the center of his calling.

Allen brought a particular gift for creating community. He believed that healing happened not only through medicine and housing, but through relationship: sitting together at a table, listening to someone’s story, sharing a meal, praying, laughing, reading Scripture, and making space for people to be fully themselves.

That gift was especially evident in the Kairos Program. Allen brought the vision for Kairos to life as a permanent supportive housing community for men who had experienced homelessness and were living with chronic health needs. Initiated in 1992, Kairos grew from a vision of spiritual recovery into a lasting home and community where men could find stability, purpose, connection, and a new beginning. He walked alongside its members through recovery, illness, loss, celebration, and the ordinary rhythms of daily life. He understood that healing could take time and that a person’s life could change when they were given the opportunity to belong. The many men who came to know him as Pastor Allen became part of his extended family, just as he became part of theirs.

For more than three decades, Allen also helped cultivate the spiritual life of Christ House. He led worship, provided pastoral counseling, gathered people for prayer and reflection, and created traditions that continue to bring the community together.

Those who knew Allen will remember many things: his warm handshake, his thoughtful questions, his love of conversation and good stories, his willingness to sit with someone in difficulty, his expansive book and music library, his delight in learning, and his ability to make people feel that there was time for them. He understood ministry as accompaniment—not standing above but walking beside.

Allen’s life was inseparable from the life of Christ House. For more than 40 years, the building at 1717 Columbia Road was not simply the place where he worked; it was home. He and Janelle raised their family in the midst of the Christ House community, sharing their lives with patients, Kairos Members, staff, volunteers, and generations of young people who came to serve. Their home became part of the larger home they created for others.

Allen leaves behind not only a family who loved him deeply, but a vast and varied community of people whose lives were changed by his presence. Patients and Kairos Members, colleagues and volunteers, fellow pastors and friends, and countless people who encountered him over the years will carry something of his spirit forward.

Rev. Allen Goetcheus spent his life reminding us that no one is beyond the reach of compassion, community, or hope. The work he helped begin continues, and his presence will remain woven into the life of Christ House.

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant” Matthew 25:21

Rev Goetcheus was such an amazing inspiration to me and part of my part of my understanding of Gods call to social justice. His life was indeed a living sacrifice. I will never forget visiting Christ House in 2010 and the impact it had on our lives. What a blessing!

I came to Christhouse in 2008 as patient from The VA HOSPITAL.. I met Pastor Allen when I moved in Transition house right around the corner from Christhouse. We developed a wonderful relationship through weekly one on one meetings.. He was our spiritual leader, and he was my friend. I have so many fond memories of him, Christhouse is a place like no other. And So was he. I also became a staff member appointed by Pastor Allen and his team.. I will always be grateful for Christhouse and The Staff led by Pastor Allen.. As it has been said: Rest Well Oh Good and Faithful Servant.. Thank-you Sir. Job Well Done.. 👏🏿👏🏿
